New Publications from Center Scientists

Many of our Center Scientists associated with the Arnold School of Public Health put out new publications in the Fall 2025 semester.

Michael Beets, Center Assistant Director and Lead of the Clinical Trials and Logistics Core, along with Center Scientists Sarah Burkart, Elizabeth Adams, Glenn Weaver, Bridget Armstrong, and Alexander McLain, Lead of the Statistical and Data Management Core, published “The Cost Effectiveness of a Free Summer Day Camp Voucher Program to Prevent Summer Weight Gain Among Children from Disadvantaged Households” in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. This article looks at the effects summer day camps have on BMI alongside the cost-effectiveness of different lengths of summer day camp programs compared to BMI effects.

These Center Scientists also published “Differences in Children’s Food and Beverage Consumption between School and Summer: Three-Year Findings from the What’s UP (Undermining Prevention) with Summer Observational Cohort Study” in BMC Public Health. This article is related to another publication included in an RCCWB post from last year: New ‘What’s UP With Summer’ Publication from Center Scientists

The previous article looked at activity level variations, whereas the article linked below examines dietary quality for children when in school and when on summer vacation, both in structured and unstructured environments.

Glenn Weaver, Sarah Burkart, Elizabeth Adams, Bridget Armstrong, and Michael Beets authored “Predicting Sleep and Sleep Stage in Children Using Actigraphy and Heartrate via a Long Short-Term Memory Deep Learning Algorithm: A Performance Evaluation” in the Journal of Sleep Research. The article examines the possibility of predicting wake and sleep stages using actigraphy, which is typically difficult, via a machine learning algorithm.
